We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Consultant in Public Health to join our forward thinking team in Northumberland County Council. Northumberland is the most beautiful county in which to live and work; that’s why we’ve just been voted the UK’s best holiday destination of the year. We can offer rugged countryside (including an international Dark Sky Park), more castles than any other county, a breathtaking coastline and a thriving arts and culture scene whilst also benefiting from good access to Newcastle (with excellent links to the rest of the UK) and an international airport.

Despite its beauty, as England’s most sparsely populated and northern county, we have some specific public health challenges. These include a disproportionately ageing population and the often forgotten socioeconomic impact of rurality. We also have an urban hub in the south east which, although representing only 3% of the county’s geography, is home to over half Northumberland’s population. Many communities in this south east corner face the difficulties consistent with the legacy of former coalfield areas.

But these are exciting times for Northumberland. We are poised to work together with colleagues in Newcastle, North Tyneside and our local PHE centre to exploit opportunities arising from the recently formed North of Tyne Combined Authority; and to support the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal which spans Cumbria and the south of Scotland. The Council has a reputation for innovation and we have a longstanding culture of close joint working and integration with our NHS colleagues which is the envy of other areas. For instance, the council works in partnership with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust on a range of international projects supporting the delivery of improved healthcare quality on a global platform. As our main acute, community and social care provider Northumbria Trust is committed to, and has invested in public health, being one of the few trusts in the country to employ a PH Consultant. With a new Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy just about to be launched, this contributes to our ability to take a true system wide approach to improving population health outcomes. We have also recently committed to developing a Health in All Policies approach within the council, building on the excellent working relationships we have as a team with other areas of the organisation.

With this in mind, we are looking for a Consultant with excellent leadership and strong technical skills who has a proven track record of developing and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders across the public and VCSE sectors and with communities. The successful applicant should be committed to using community centred approaches to improve health and wellbeing. The portfolio for this post is open to negotiation but is likely to include mental health and wellbeing, support to international projects with the Trust, and leadership around specific wider determinants and commissioned services. The post-holder must be on the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists/GMC/GDC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.

For an informal discussion call Elizabeth Morgan, Director of Public Health on 01670 620111.

Closing Date: Monday 11 February 2019

Interview Date: Friday 22 March 2019
