Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums (TWAM) is a large and successful archive and museum service managing nine venues in Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside. The museum collection reflects a period of collection of over 200 years and approximately 1.1 million items, while the archive collections are among the largest in the country.
Led by the British Library and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Unlocking Our Sound Heritage is a major UK wide project that will help save the nation’s sounds and open them up to everyone. The project aims to digitally preserve almost 500,000 endangered sound recordings from across the UK and make 100,000 available online, transforming the visibility of sound archive collections in the process. The British Library have established a network of audio preservation centres across the UK. Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums is the regional hub for the North-East and Yorkshire. Over three years, we will work with partners across the region to ensure that 5,000 sound heritage items are digitally preserved and accessible to new audiences. The digitised material will then be used as part of innovative learning and outreach activities.
To deliver this project, we are looking to recruit a Rights Clearance Officer who will be responsible for clearing recordings for online publication. The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues and legislation, as well as, a sound understanding of copyright law, data protection and privacy issues. They will also have a relevant degree or demonstrable experience of rights clearance, ideally with sound and audio recordings.
The post holder will undertake (IPR) research and trace rights holders in line with agreed rights clearance policies. They will negotiate and record any agreements made about rights and access. They will also consider what action needs to be taken to ensure that any sensitive material is either cleared for use or restricted. In carrying out this work, the post holder will need to consider how much and what type of effort to make for each case of IPR, and will variously contact and consult recordists and rights owners including, where appropriate, artists and communities directly and via rights collecting societies, musicians unions and/or local community organisations.
