The Great North Museum: Hancock has recently been awarded funding by Arts Council England through its Designated Development Fund for a new project ‘Broadcasting the Brady Collection’.
The pioneer 19th Century Marine Biologist, George Brady collected thousands of marine invertebrates which are now part of the collections of the Natural History Society of Northumbria and are cared for by Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums at the Great North Museum: Hancock. This project seeks to increase the research and public engagement potential of the Ostracods in this collection, and to highlight their power as bio-indicators of climate and sea change, and how this can support contemporary debate and science.
This all starts with you.
We are seeking to recruit a project officer who will work on improving the documentation for around 6000 records of the Brady Collection. By adding key specialist information, such as taxonomic names, we can improve the data for inclusion in on-line scientific, global research portals, raise the research profile of the collection and use the data as the creative spark for creating a small exhibition and a digital display to engage audiences with the beauty and power of this data.
With a degree in Natural Science, a related subject or relevant experience, you will have significant experience of working with databases and data entry, an understanding of zoological nomenclature, systematics and taxonomy and be highly PC literate.
You will need to be methodical and organised with an eye for detail. You will understand the creative power of data and help the organisation realise this through this foundational work.
