The Service
Trading Standards and Animal Health forms part of the wider remit of the Business Compliance and Public Safety Unit. In turn, this sits within the Council’s Housing and Public Protection Service. Whilst operationally managed by as a single team and integrated working is encouraged, Trading Standards and Animal Health are two separate functions with their own dedicated officers, each led by a Senior Trading Standards Officer.

The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join Trading Standards and Animal Health in Northumberland for a fixed term in a unique hybrid role spanning all areas of the team. We are looking for a dynamic individual with a ‘can do’ attitude that is able to meet the flexible needs of the service and thrives on diverse work. You should be willing and able to actively participate in practical elements of animal health and feeding stuffs enforcement in rural environments. Equally, you will have the skill set needed to deal with consumer complaints and investigate compliance with consumer protection law in more urban business settings.

Depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the post will be appointed on either Level 3 Fair Trading Officer (Band 6) or Level 4 (Band 7)


We are offering:
- A fixed term contract to March 2023 (this may be extended if funding permits)
- A salary of £24,982 - £27,741 (band 6), £28,672 - £32,234 (band 7)
- 25 days annual leave plus public and bank holidays (rising to 30 after 5 years of service)(pro-rata for part-time employees)

Essential criteria for appointment at either band 6 or band 7 grading includes the need for:
- A minimum of 5 GCSES at A-C grades (or equivalent),
- Experience in a comparable investigatory role,
- An ability to engage effectively with colleagues, customers and businesses,
- Being an effective team player but also able to work unsupervised.

Appointment to band 7 is subject to production of certificates proving qualification/competence in subject area(s) relevant to Trading Standards or Animal Health. Where this evidence is not available or certificates are not held, appointment will be made at band 6.
