Qualified Accountant – Group Financial Controller

The role: Financial Controller

The successful candidate will be ACA, ACCA or CIMA Qualified. They will work within the Improvement and Innovation team of Northumberland County Council (NCC), primarily responsible for all financial matters for Northumberland Enterprise Holdings Ltd (NEHL) – a newly established company wholly owned by NCC - together with its subsidiaries.

This is an opportunity to be involved at the outset and help shape the future of this exciting new venture, which has plans to develop separate businesses in consulting, care and “green” sectors as well as others that the candidate may help bring forward.

The post is band 11 (£48,402 - £51,780), on a permanent full-time (37 hours per week) basis. Please note that this is a permanent position but applications on a secondment or part time basis would be considered for the right applicant. The successful candidate will officially be based at County Hall, Morpeth, but agile working will be available and promoted.


We are looking for someone who has demonstrable experience of company set up and financial management using commercial accountancy software and knowledge of local government corporate management systems would be desirable. The successful candidate will also be involved in supporting other council review functions from a financial perspective.

In addition to strong financial reporting and analysis skills, this person must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to be effective at managing and influencing stakeholders. The post holder should have a high self-drive and initiative and the ability to adapt to novel and challenging situations. Leadership qualities are highly desirable.
