Newcastle City Council SEND Outreach Service is looking to appoint four SEN Support workers on a fixed term contract until the end of July 2023. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is committed to promoting a child centred and inclusive approach to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people with special education needs including communication and interaction needs (autism).
The SEND Outreach Service team within the SEND Outreach Service currently includes 8 FTE qualified specialist teachers who work on a peripatetic basis to provide a range of advice, support and training for schools and settings across mainstream schools in Newcastle. The SEN Support Workers will work under the supervision of the Communication and Interaction and/or the Cognition and Learning specialist teachers to promote and model inclusive practices and develop capacity within mainstream schools. The job will require working in an agile manner; most of the day to be spent in schools supporting pupils as well as time for planning and preparation on a working from home basis or from the Civic Centre.
The main duties of the SEN Support Workers will be to:
• model the use of evidence-based strategies, approaches and intervention programmes in schools and settings,
• work directly with identified pupils in settings either individually or in small groups,
• assist pupils in developing an insight into their diagnosis through the identification of their strengths and differences,
• Work closely with staff in the mainstream schools, offering advice and strategies to enable the successful inclusion of children and young people with SEN in mainstream schools and settings.
• Contribute to the development of SEN Support Plans for individual pupils through the identification of appropriate outcomes and provide strategies and resources to help deliver the plan.
• Be responsible on a day-to-day basis for the planning and delivery of programmes of intervention and support to develop social communication skills, language skills and social/emotional skills.
• Maintaining records as directed by the specialist teachers.
• Liaise closely with parents/carers
