The Service



The Northumberland Speech Language and Communication Support Service is currently made up of 1 dual qualified Teacher/Speech Therapist, 2 Speech and Language Therapists, 1 Language and Communication Teacher and 8 Specialist SLCN Assistants who provide a range of services into schools and settings throughout Northumberland. The day-to-day operational management and organisation of the team is the responsibility of the Lead Practitioner who in turn reports to the High Incidence Needs Team Manager. The service operates from a centralised base in Cramlington working peripatetically into schools and settings.

The role

The Northumberland Speech, Language and Communication Support Service is a peripatetic team working with school staff and multi-disciplinary professionals to assess the needs of learners (predominantly between the ages of 3 and 16 years old) with speech, language and communication needs and subsequently to support the school or setting in the implementation and evaluation of appropriate strategies and approaches. We place a strong emphasis on building capacity within schools through a process of consultation and training.

We are looking for a qualified primary or secondary phase teacher with a significant level of experience working with children and young people with language and communication needs (LCN) or Speech, Language and Communication needs (SLCN) and knowledge and experience of implementing evidence-based interventions and approaches to this cohort of learners. The successful candidate will also: have previous experience of managing staff; be highly motivated; an effective communicator with excellent report writing, time management and organisational skills; committed to supporting inclusion within mainstream school settings; able to interact with ease with colleagues, staff in schools, pupils and parents demonstrating high standards of spoken English and be able to fulfil the travel requirements of a peripatetic teacher working in a large rural county.


In addition to carrying a caseload the Lead Practitioner will also be responsible for:

? acting as the professional lead for Speech, Language and Communication within the Speech, Language and Communication Support Service and wider Northumberland Inclusive Education services

? the strategic leadership of Speech, Language and Communication within the Speech, Language and Communication Support Service under the direction of the High Incidence Needs Manager

? ensuring compliance with professional standards as applicable to this professional group from within NCC and beyond

? managing designated tasks and functions on behalf of the High Incidence Needs Manager

? monitoring, supervising and appraising the professional practice of staff employed within the Speech, Language and Communication Support Service and other nominated staff within the High Incidence Needs Teams.


The purpose of the role is:

? the day to day operational management of the Speech, Language and Communication Support Service under the supervision of the High Incidence Needs Manager

? to conduct the performance management of and provide supervision for staff within the Speech, Language and Communication Support Service and other nominated staff within the High Incidence Needs Teams as required

? to provide specialist assessment, support and advice for children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication needs within schools/settings across Northumberland.

? to be responsible for a personal caseload of children and young people (predominantly 3 to 16 years old) with Speech, Language and Communication needs or Language and Communication needs (dependent upon qualifications held).

? to enable schools and settings to develop their abilities and skills to meet the Speech, Language and Communication needs of their pupils.
