The governors are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, dynamic and inspirational Deputy Head Teacher who will play a critical role in the continued development of our school.

South Gosforth is currently a two-form entry first school for pupils from Reception to Year 4. Pupil numbers in our school are always high, with stability rates well above average and most year groups are frequently oversubscribed.

Located within the suburb of Gosforth in Newcastle upon Tyne, the school (sometimes known as ‘The Pyramid School’ due to the configuration of the roof) is situated right next to South Gosforth metro station and close to Gosforth High Street. We are very lucky to have a large playing field, alongside a separate playground area with a pond and nature garden, a vegetable patch, as well as an EYFS outdoor classroom area. Inside our building we have 2 large hall spaces which we use to facilitate a whole range of sports, music and drama activities and we have just developed a special space called ‘The Nest’ which is used to deliver nurture group provision for our children who require this additional support. We have also just opened our brand new fully functioning school library which our children love going to every week to choose their library books to take home.

At South Gosforth First School, our tagline is ‘Roots to Grow and Wings to Fly’ – We believe that this encapsulates what is important for our children. ‘Roots to Grow’ represents the emphasis which we place upon nurturing our children to grow into kind, compassionate, happy young people with warm hearts who care deeply about others. The ‘Wings to Fly’ element represents our aim to provide an inspirational, dynamic and meaningful curriculum which ignites our pupils’ curiosity about the world around them. We are proud of our pupils’ high standards of academic achievement and for the excellent behaviour for learning which they demonstrate.

Our curriculum intent is centred around ‘The 4 Cs’:
Character – What kind of people we are
Culture – How we learn about the world and all of the people who live in it
Creativity – How we use our imagination
And Challenge – How we make ourselves better every day

These concepts lie at the heart of everything that we do in school – they inform our curriculum and are ‘lived’ every day through our ethos and culture.

At South Gosforth First School, we place a huge amount of emphasis on providing a range of ‘Cultural Capital’ opportunities for our children, as we believe that this helps them develop a range of strategies to express themselves, learn about their local community and further afield and also develop a sense of what they are good at and enjoy throughout their time in our school, so that that our pupils are ready to explore these avenues further once they move onto the next chapter of their school career. Our children have recently taken part in fantastic projects with Voices of Virtue gospel choir, Ballet Lorrent, Unfolding Theatre and Theatre Alibi, as well as accessing a whole range of extra-curricular activities including steel pans club, debate club, football club, gymnastics club, dance club, and many more.

If you are successful in your application, you will enjoy working with a dedicated and professional team of teaching and support staff, a committed and highly skilled governing body and an active parents’ association. Our parents and carers have high expectations of school and their children and their involvement and support for the school is strong. Above all, our pupils are wonderful, highly motivated, conscientious and enthusiastic young people and they really are a pleasure to work with.

We would be happy to receive applications from current senior leaders, or staff who are not yet on the leadership team but who have sufficient and relevant experience and are seeking a promoted post.

Prior to submitting your application, visits to the school would be welcome. Visits can be arranged by contacting the school office either by email (admin@southgosforth.newcastle.sch.uk) or by phone (0191 2853453). Please do let us know if you require any additional access arrangements before your visit. We would request that all visitors to school take an LFD test before their visit and do not attend school if this result comes back positive or if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. We would also request that visitors wear a mask whilst walking around school in communal areas please.

Applicants can also view further information about the school by accessing our school website (http://www.southgosforth.newcastle.sch.uk/web) and also by reading our parent and carer handbook which is included within this application pack.
The application pack for this post can be accessed from our school website under the ‘Job Vacancies’ section or this pack can also be requested by emailing the school admin office.
