What is a Civil Engineering Apprenticeship?

Civil engineering technicians support in the design, creation and connecting up of the world around us, making the villages, towns and cities work for residents and visitors of Northumberland. Civil engineering apprentices assist in the preparation and production of plans, designs and documentation to relevant codes of practice and industry standards, such as Construction Design and Management (CDM). The apprenticeship takes approximately 36 months to complete, achieving a recognised BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Civil Engineering on completion. The apprenticeship:

Starting in September 2022, you will join our Local Services team and receive a thorough induction, training and support to enable you to learn the skills and knowledge needed for the role. Four days per week you will be supported on the job by your colleagues and line manager. One day per week is allocated to specialist off the job apprenticeship training, studying modules, such as:

• Construction Principles & Design
• Construction Technology
• Health and Safety in Construction
• Site Engineering for Construction
• Further Mathematics for Construction
• Construction in Civil Engineering.

The Service

Technical Services is responsible for the provision of three key functions across Northumberland. We manage, maintain and improve the highway and transport network, to make sure that everyone can travel safely and without significant delay or disruption on our roads, footways and cycleways throughout the year. Alongside this we arrange home to school transport and procure supported public transport services. We also provide the Lead Local Flood Authority and Coastal Protection Authority roles.

What does the day to day look like:

Work alongside qualified civil engineers, managers and colleagues to learn aspects of the role

Prepare and produce sketches, diagrams, and models, to support technical problem solving

Assist in the preparation and production of plans, designs and documentation to relevant codes of practice and industry standards

Operate bespoke software which includes working with mapping and planning systems.

Assist colleagues on site visits, take photographs and log details of visits.

Carry out calculations and data analysis,

Provide general administrative tasks such as processing information, creation and collating of documents, photocopying.

Maintain information systems such as filing, uploading and extraction of data.

Gather and enter data into spreadsheets, databases and other electronic information systems.


About you:
- Ambitious, enthusiastic and proactive individual
- Enjoy spending time in an office environment, working on site or working remotely.
- Like to work in a team but also be able to work on your own when set specific tasks
- Good communication skills, key to building strong working relationships and aid your development and team working
- Strong organisation skills and good time management skills

What you need:
- GCSE Maths and English Grade 4/C or above (or predicted) or Level 2 Functional skills.
- Dedication and commitment to complete your apprenticeship over 36 months.
