What is a Regulatory Compliance Officer (RCO) Apprenticeship?
This apprenticeship is the first step towards a career as a professionally qualified Trading Standards Officer. Throughout this 24 month apprenticeship you will be supported to develop the foundation skills and knowledge needed to enforce statutory duties and responsibilities. The apprenticeship:
Starting in September 2022, you will join our Trading Standards team and receive a thorough induction, training and support to enable you to learn the skills and knowledge needed for the role. Four days per week you will be supported on the job by your colleagues and line manager. One day per week is allocated to specialist off the job apprenticeship training, studying modules, such as:

- Introduction to regulation
- Regulations and risk
- Supporting businesses
- Responding to non-compliance
- The digital market, information and compliance


Progression
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship this role will lead to appointment to the role of Trainee Trading Standards Officer where you will progress onto the Stage 1 of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute Professional Competency Framework (CPCF) - your apprenticeship exempts you from a large proportion of the course.

The Service
Trading Standards is a key regulatory service with a varied role in Northumberland, enforcing legislation relating to fair trading, product safety, weights and measures, food standards and animal feeding stuffs.

As an RCO apprentice, you will learn to receive and process complaints and enquiries and to audit, encourage and monitor business compliance in these general areas.


What does the day to day look like:

Although no two days are the same you will be supported alongside our Trading Standards Officers and Fair Trading Officer to learn and develop all aspects of the role. This includes:

Assist in the investigation of complaints and the researching of information to fulfil service requests.

Assist colleagues in carrying out inspection work and provide practical help in the form of preparing and handling equipment, taking photographs and logging details as instructed.

Gain an understanding and become familiar with legal processes that have to be followed and restrictions that apply to techniques that are used..

Assist the team in considering the safety of a range of items, for example; electrical appliance, or toy, checked the accuracy of a petrol pump, carried out a test purchase of illicit tobacco, seized counterfeit goods and given business advice on food allergens.

Assist officers to take a witness statement from a victim of a rogue trader, formally interviewed a different trader about a misdescribed product and given business advice on underage sales of alcohol or vapes.

What you need:
-3 A-level or equivalent passes in relevant subjects

-GCSE pass at Grade 4 / Grade C in Maths and English language (or equivalents).?

-Full, clean driving licence?

-Dedication and commitment to complete your apprenticeship over 16 months and continue studying for professional qualifications for a further 2-3 years
