In South Tyneside our children and families are at the forefront of everything we do. We want every child and family to feel supported in times of need and empowered to make the right decisions. We take pride in our social work teams, where staff are valued and supported and where we work together to drive this vision forward.
If you would like to hear more about what we can offer you and the work we do, please come along to a virtual, informal drop in session with the Principal Social Worker, one of our Practice Managers, and a care experienced person, this can be offered on a 1-1 basis. Contact pamela.mcardle@southtyneside.gov.uk to book a slot.
We have range of social work opportunities across our teams, including the Integrated Safeguarding Interventions Teams (ISIT) our Supporting and Strengthening Families Teams (SSF), Children Disabilities Team and Children Cared For Teams.
We know safeguarding intervention is challenging and we want to ensure staff are safe and supported. You will work in a small team where you will benefit from a high level of guidance and oversight, and access to a management team that is visible and approachable.
We have a good training offer and all practitioners have access to an on line research and resource offer.
We believe our Strength Based Practice Framework creates the best foundations for social work to flourish, working collaboratively with families to build trusting and respectful relationships and we place great importance on partnership relationships.
We welcome social workers at all stages in their career to join our teams. As a Newly Qualified Social Worker you will have the opportunity to undertake your Assessed and Supported Year in employment (ASYE) and will be supported by a Senior Practitioner all the way through this 12 month programme.
As an experienced social worker you will have highly developed knowledge and skills, a commitment to providing an outstanding service to children and young people and a leadership role in supporting our less experienced social workers.
If you are not yet a progressed social worker but 2+ years qualified you will be supported through our career progression framework, and when ready, complete a progression portfolio, as well as access to post qualifying training, including practice education.
Our staff tell us they feel listened to, valued and supported and we have monthly Coffee and Chat drop-in sessions with the Head of Service and Principal Social Worker where you can meet colleagues and discuss the things that matter to you.

Testimonial
‘’South Tyneside Council is a great local authority to work for, offering tremendous support to newly qualified workers, a place where individuality is encouraged and appreciated. I completed my student placement here and from the very first day I felt welcomed and supported not just by my Practice Educator but by everyone - managers, social workers, family workers and business support colleagues. Several reasons inspired me to consider children's social services as a long-term career path and South Tyneside Council children’s team has certainly played a positive role in it. The good practices that I have seen include focus by senior management on strength-based approach and the importance of giving voice to children in all stages of intervention. I appreciated having a lesser caseload as a newly qualified social worker which led to enhanced case reflection. The level of support for all social workers in terms of capacity development and quality assurance is exceptional.” Year two, PQ social worker.
South Tyneside Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will be sought along with other relevant pre-employment checks.
