ABOUT DARLINGTON
Darlington is an historic market town, located in the southernmost part of County Durham, on the border with North Yorkshire. Darlington is part of the Tees Valley sub-region and is a Borough of 76 sq km, one of the UK’s smallest Unitary Authorities.
With a population of 106,000, the Town Centre plays a pivotal part with a good and diverse range of business, leisure and mix of national and independent retail.
The economy of Darlington is driven by the service sector, where as once manufacturing was preeminent, notably from the birth of the world’s first passenger railway in 1825. The diverse economy includes Public Administration, Education, Health and other services, Distribution, Transport and Advance Engineering.
With an employment rate above England’s average, there are good opportunities for growth both in our Town Centre and across our very well positioned key economic zone. GVA growth figures for the past few years have been impressive and we have regularly featured in independent reviews of Top 10 Places to Live.
More details can be found on our economy, the Borough and key sectors at www.investindarlington.co.uk.
CONNECTIVITY AND THE SUB REGION
Darlington is in the envious position of being located on the major spine of the UK.
The A1M and the East Coast Mainline link Darlington, North to Newcastle and Scotland and South to London. It is also on the main A66 East West route connecting with the Tees Valley and the West of England. With the Durham Tees Valley Airport and Teesport on our doorstep, we are ideally placed.
Darlington is one of five Local Authority areas that form part of the Tees Valley sub region and one of the few areas in the UK that has established a Combined Authority to help drive strategic growth across the wider region (www.teesvalley-ca.gov.uk).
