Do you have recent experience of providing housing advice and working with vulnerable people or people with multiple and complex needs? Then join Shelter as an Advice, Support & Guidance Adviser – Housing and you could soon be delivering a vital advice service to individuals and families alike.

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change — with individuals, in communities, across society – and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

About the role:

The structure of Shelter North East enables us to provide an integrated service focusing on homelessness prevention and tenancy sustainment to individuals and families in greatest need. Right now, we’re looking for a proactive individual with experience of delivering housing advice (this can be at a generalist level) to work as part of a team and advise clients with a variety of needs. Initially based at our Newcastle office, this new role will also involve travelling to Sunderland to deliver advice in outreach venues and splitting your time between the two locations. And, in addition to providing clients with a holistic approach to the issue they present with, we’ll rely on you to work with other agencies and professionals and establish partnerships that will enable each client to reach their goal.

About you:

Used to providing housing advice and working with vulnerable people or people with multiple and complex needs, you have a good understanding of the safeguarding framework too. You also have a proven ability to work with a wide variety of statutory and non-statutory stakeholders. What’s more, you’re customer focused, results-driven, respond well to change and have the communication skills it takes to understand clients’ needs and deliver appropriate advice. Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications is important too, with experience of using a case management system preferred.

We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.

At Shelter, we welcome and encourage applications from everyone regardless of age, disability, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. We are facing diverse problems, so need diverse people to tackle them.
