The Register Office is looking to expand its pool of Casual Deputy Registrars. The successful candidates will be able to register and perform marriages, produce copy certificates and provide administrative support to the office.

The post will also involve registering and performing marriages at both the Register Office and at approved venues. Please note that the post does not include the registering of births and deaths, Civil Partnerships or Citizenship Services.

Previous experience is not essential as full training will be given. Experience in a frontline customer service environment is essential with the ability to speak confidently in public. The ability to understand and apply rules and procedures, to maintain accurate records, to take payments and also deal with sensitive and confidential information is essential.

The post is casual in nature and you will join a pool of casual registrars whose hours are allocated on an as and when required basis and there are no guaranteed or minimum hours per week.

Casual registrar’s hours are set on a three monthly advance rota although you are also required to be flexible depending upon the changing demand including for covering staff holidays and sickness and also the demand for appointments. Hours of work can vary throughout the week from Monday to Sunday and including bank holidays. You may be required to work at short notice for varying periods of time, therefore a flexible approach to your availability is essential.

Under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Regulations 1968 the following are disqualified from being a registrar: Non Discharged Bankrupt, Authorised Person, Secretary of Synagogues or Registering Officer for the Society of Friends, Minister of Religion, Medical Practitioner, Midwife, Undertaker or persons involved in the burial or cremation business or anyone engaged in the business of life insurance.
