Deputy Director of Public Health  (37 hours, Permanent Post)

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Consultant in Public Health to join our team in Northumberland County Council and support the Director of Public Health in a Deputy Director role.  Northumberland is a fantastic county in which to live and work, offering rugged countryside (including an international Dark Sky Park), a breathtaking coastline and a thriving arts and culture scene whilst also benefiting from good access to Newcastle and an international airport.

Despite its beauty, as England’s most sparsely populated county, we have some specific public health challenges - rurality for the vast majority of the county and the difficulties consistent with the legacy of former coalfield areas in the south east.  However, we also have opportunities to explore arising from the recently formed North of Tyne Combined Authority and the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

The Council has a reputation for innovation and we have a longstanding culture of close joint working and integration with our NHS colleagues which is the envy of other areas and are committed to developing a Health in All Policies approach across the organisation.

With this in mind, we are looking for a Consultant with excellent leadership and strong technical skills who has a proven track record of developing and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders across the public and VCSE sectors and with communities.
The portfolio for this post is open to negotiation but, as well as responsibilities commensurate with a Deputy Director, is likely to also include mental health and wellbeing; strategic leadership for the wider determinants; and oversight of one or more commissioned services.
The post-holder must be on the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists/GMC/GDC Specialist Register at the time of the interview and have 2 years experience as a Consultant working in or closely with Local Authorities.

We are offering:
- Local Authority Senior Manager Grade 15 (£79,741 - £89,395)
- A wide range of staff benefits including a competitive annual leave provision
- Flexible working arrangements

Essential requirements:
- Applicants must be on the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists/GMC/GDC Specialist Register at the time of the interview
- Minimum of 2 years experience as a Consultant working in, or closely with Local Authorities
- Masters in Public Health (or equivalent)

Please read the attached Job Description and Person Specification for full details of the post.
For further information about this vacancy, please contact Liz Morgan on 01670 620111 for an informal discussion.

Please note that successful applicants must be able to attend an interview on Wednesday 19 February 2020.
The closing date for applications is midnight on Friday 20 December 2019.
