We are looking to appoint a highly skilled and confident person to join us as soon as possible. The main aspect of the role will be covering classes during short term absence of teachers as well as supporting students in lessons, accompanying students to educational visits and helping out with a wide range of extra-curricular activities. You will need to be good-humoured, resilient and enjoy working with young people aged 9-13.
Cover supervisors often use this experience in order to go on to train to teach, or to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, and they use their experience here as a means of developing a strong application profile to do this. It may well be that the person we appoint will use this opportunity in the same way.
The main feature of your work will be providing supervision cover for hour-long lessons during the school day. You will usually be used for this cover where the teacher absence is short term, either through sudden illness for which we had not planned the day before, or for planned absence where a teacher is on a course or conference.
You will be given the materials for the lesson and be expected to manage the learning and behaviour of students. In addition, you will be required at times to support teachers if there is no cover requirement, support children in or out of lessons, or to accompany staff when they take groups of students out of school (for instance to theatre/gallery visits or conferences). You will follow all the normal procedures of the school and you will receive an induction programme and on the job training.
You will need to be flexible and work with initiative. Other duties may include test invigilation, helping teachers with preparation and production of classroom materials, classroom display and some administrative or support work on behalf of our Pastoral Guidance and SENDCo lead.
The role will not be about containment and control, but about creating a positive climate for learning in which you and students will want to work and learn. Cover Supervisors will be expected to become widely involved in the extra-curricular life of the School, and as a result they will have excellent relationships with children, who really value their contribution.
You will be required to participate in the whole staff training programme on Tuesday after school. This is a great opportunity to work and train with colleagues who you might otherwise have the change to meet.
Our School Ethos was written by staff and students and truly summarises what our school means to us. Our motto is ‘To Care and Succeed’ and we strive to embody this in all that we do. The successful applicant will demonstrate such values and make an outstanding contribution to our school community.
If you would like to visit us, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or by telephoning 0191 2532335. Our children love to show visitors our school and we would be delighted to meet you and answer any questions you may have.
Monkseaton Middle School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. As such an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will be sought along with other relevant employment checks deemed appropriate.
This post is 37 hours per week, term time only over 195 days, fixed term for 1 year. The post may involve some flexibility of hours to meet the needs of the school.
