Consultant Social Worker - 12 Months Secondment commencing in August 2020
(Adults with Mental Health Team, South Tyneside)
£39,782 or £41,675 pa for AMHP status

"South Tyneside is a fantastic place to be; with passionate people, who really care about each other; great partnership working as part of our South Tyneside Alliance; some amazing services and a real sense of community spirit". If this sounds like the right working environment for your next career move, then come and join us in Adults and Integrated Care.

Having been highly commended in the Skills for Care Accolades awards 2020 for the most effective collaborative approach to integrated new models of care category, and a finalist in the national Social Work Awards and the LGC Awards, Adult Social Care in South Tyneside continues to develop and flourish as part of our exciting journey of change.

Are you looking to progress your social work career and develop management and leadership experience whilst staying in frontline practice? If so, then this is an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Consultant Social Worker and help lead change in mental health services.

During 2020, South Tyneside will be partnering with Think Ahead – a charity that works with NHS and Local Authority community mental health services to strengthen the contribution of social work. We’ll be taking on four trainee social workers (participants) who will join the organisation; therefore this is a great opportunity for an experienced social worker to take on the role of Consultant Social Worker.

In this role you will:
• Join a network of leaders across the country promoting and strengthening mental health social work.
• Lead and develop four talented participants, who are passionate about mental health and social work.
• Develop your skills in practice, supervision, and education.
• Get fully funded CPD training, including a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Social Work from Middlesex University.
• Enhance your salary.

In this full-time secondment position, you’ll manage a “unit” of four participants who are placed in a community mental health service. You will retain a frontline role, share a caseload, and act as their leader and role model and provide them with practice education of outstanding quality. You’ll also work with an academic tutor and assess participants’ ability to put social work theories, interventions, and legislation into practice.

Benefits:
You will join a group of Consultant Social Workers delivering a prestigious, high-profile initiative across the country (to date, Think Ahead has worked with more than half of NHS Trusts and over a third of Local Authorities). You’ll receive CPD training to consolidate and develop your expertise in evidence-based interventions.

Requirements:
You will be a registered social worker with significant experience of working with people with complex mental health needs from a range of community mental health services. You will also need the enthusiasm, confidence, and authority to inspire others.

You do not need to be a qualified Practice Educator as you will receive Practice Educator training Stages 1 and 2. If you have PEPS 2, you will undertake refresher
training.

Although the secondment is officially due to commence in August 2020, you must ensure that you would be available to attend the Think Ahead Launch Event in London on 16th May 2020, where you will meet the participants in your unit, other Consultant Social Workers and learn more about the programme. You will also be expected to commence fully funded continuing professional development opportunities during July 2020.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Sarah Fitzgerald, National Consultant Social Worker at Think Ahead (S.Fitzgerald@thinkahead.org, 07493 459 637) or Antoinette O’Sullivan Operational Manager – Adults Mental Health Team on (0191) 4244307. You can also read about the experiences of some of Think Ahead’s current Consultant Social Workers on Community Care and Think Ahead’s website.

The “Introduction to Think Ahead and the Consultant Social Worker role” document also provides an overview of the organisation and the role for those not familiar with Think Ahead.

South Tyneside Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will be sought along with other relevant pre-employment checks.
