Further Information
Start Well Sunderland is a new project that Barnardo's is implementing to support women who are at risk of having their child removed.
You will be responsible for implementing a range of interventions and support measures as part of an integrated package of health, therapeutic and social support specifically designed to address the complex needs of women who are currently pregnant and where there is a risk of their child being removed into care or of them losing their child.
Through intensive support you will empower and support women to make positive changes in their lives, and ultimately reduce the numbers of children being removed into care. Working closely with the Sunderland pre-birth team you will work systemically in delivering a relationship based programme where frequency, tenacity and creativity are central.
In this developmental role you may be required to offer specific support to engage with assessments and plans linked directly to care proceedings. There may be elements of parenting support when the court has requested parenting work. However, there will also be an overall emphasis on holistic support including mental health and wellbeing; physical health including sexual health support and advice around contraception; and ongoing practical support.
Some responsibilities include:
• Undertake an effective, flexible, intensive outreach approach to engage with women;
• Support the development and maintenance of effective local pathways with key agencies, e.g. midwifery, children's social care, housing and mental health;
• Ensure an evidence base is applied to practice through a collaborative assessment of a woman's needs and strengths;
• Ensure outcomes are achieved through the use of Barnardos Monitoring and Evaluation and that data and recording is completed to a high standard;
Please be aware that this role will be based in Cowgate but will be working in Sunderland.
At Barnardo's we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. Our safer recruitment processes mean that the safety and welfare of the child is paramount at every stage of the process and therefore, we adopt rigorous scrutiny in our pre-employment checking. This post is subject to a range of pre-employment checks including a Criminal Records Enhanced Disclosure for the successful candidate.
Barnardo's believe in creating equality of opportunity in the workplace and supporting people to manage their work-life balance; we are therefore are open to offering flexible working arrangements.
