Further Information
Do you get a buzz out of helping people to resolve even the most complex housing issues?
Are you looking for a social welfare role with a charity that's making a real difference to people's lives?
Citizens Advice Gateshead is an independent charity and a member of the national Citizens Advice network. Our vision is for a fair society for all, with lives well lived. Our mission is to mobilise knowledge so the system works, it works for everyone, and it powers the changes we need to be an equal and inclusive society. To achieve this, we deliver services locally to almost 13,000 people a year and support over 400,000 people nationally through digital advice and information services, including the discrimination advice service.
As a result of receiving some new funding we are delighted to be now recruiting a Social Welfare Adviser for 12 months, with a view to extension subject to funding. The priority for the role holder will be to provide advice and information to Gateshead residents facing common housing issues, and where necessary to provide court representation for those clients with more complex issues who are not eligible for legal aid, such as possession action, homelessness and illegal eviction.
To be considered for this role, you will have in-depth experience of providing social welfare advice, information and guidance, on the phone or face-to-face, and will be able to evidence that you have been able to support clients to achieve the best possible outcomes. You will be able to demonstrate at least 2 years' casework experience in housing and one other category of social welfare advice (preferably welfare benefits or debt), and be capable of adapting positively and rapidly to changing circumstances. You will also have experience of sharing your knowledge with staff and volunteers, to help them to reach their maximum potential to best service our clients' needs, and will be able to evidence your experience of both preparing for court proceedings and providing representation within the rights of audience for those proceedings.
This role is for a 12-month contract with a view to extension subject to funding.
Located in Gateshead centre within a few minutes’ walk of the metro/bus interchange (remote working is also required - including homeworking to comply with Covid-19 social distancing measures)
Comprehensive employee benefits including Metro Saver scheme and retail discount opportunities.
Development opportunities within a forward-thinking charity looking to grow its impact.
