An opportunity has arisen for a fixed term Benefit Improvement and Development Officer, within the Benefit Service of Sunderland City Council. The Benefit Service is responsible for the calculation and award of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims for the residents of the City of Sunderland, and currently has a caseload of around 36,000 claims.

The successful candidate will be responsible to the Legislation and Supported Housing Team Manager and will be part of a busy team. You will contribute to the assessment of Supported Accommodation rents and the processing of Supported Accommodation Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims. You will also deal with second stage appeals to Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service and the Valuation Tribunal Service.

You will also be required to support the management of projects, manage the implementation of new and revised legislation and contribute to the successful roll out of Welfare Reform changes.

Liaison with partners and stakeholders plays a very important role in this post and therefore you must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You must also have excellent numerical skills, be able to work as part of a team and can work to deadlines.

The successful candidate must have a substantial experience in dealing with complex Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support cases. Experience of assessing Supported Accommodation rents and dealing with appeals would be advantageous although full training will be given.
