An exciting opportunity has arisen in Sunderland City Council for a Homeless Reduction Officer within the Housing Options Team.

The role of the Homelessness Reduction Officer is to interview, assess and identify prevention/relief options for people while working collaboratively with housing and homelessness services, prisons, drug treatment agencies and other relevant partners. You will carry out a housing needs assessment and a personalised housing plan (PHP) with the customer to ensure successful outcomes.

A key part of this role is delivering housing advice and to carry out assessments making appropriate enquiries to determine the available options for the individual. You will need to have a good understanding of the Homeless Reduction Act 2017, issues surrounding homelessness and its prevention/relief of homelessness, along with IT and case recording skills. As important, is the ability to solve problems within the context of the Council’s policies and legal duties, manage a caseload and meet deadlines as well as being able to work on your own initiative and as part of the team. The successful candidate will need to be able to negotiate and communicate empathetically with people whilst being sensitive to different life experiences.

You will also be responsible to provide information, advice and guidance to internal and external customers on housing/homelessness issues. To engage and liaise with internal and external bodies around accommodation solutions and support. To work with customers and accommodation/support providers to ensure PHP’s delivered successful outcomes.

This role can be demanding but rewarding, providing a real opportunity to help people in need access the services they require.

The post holder will be part of a busy and vibrant team dealing with both internal and external customers. You will be required to have excellent interpersonal communication skills both written and verbally and have excellent literacy, numeracy and customer service skills and a general understanding of Council Procedures.
