Gateshead Council is a visionary and ambitious local authority - ambitious for Gateshead the place, and for the people who live and work here.
We have made significant investment into our adult social care service and are also embarking on a major transformation programme.
Part of that investment is the development of a new Promoting Independence Centre (PIC) scheduled to open in 2021.
In the meantime, we require casual staff to work in our 3 existing PICs: Shadon House in Birtley; Eastwood in Felling and Southernwood in Allerdene.
If you are successful in your application this may lead to securing a permanent post either in our PICs or elsewhere within our Adult Social Care service or in the independent social care sector.
As a support worker, you will need to carry out a range of duties including supporting service users with tasks that promote their independence, maximize their wellbeing and maintain their dignity, which will include personal care tasks.
Prior knowledge and working experience of services for older people would be preferable, though we are willing to train people who have a caring attitude and wish to consider a role in the care sector.
You will need excellent communication skills and have a commitment to service user consultation and working with other agencies who assist in providing care.
Ideally you will have a Level 2 NVQ in Care or equivalent qualification or be willing to work towards this. You will also need to have a moving and handling certificate – again if you don’t have this now, we will organise the training for you to obtain it.
Experience of working as part of a team is desirable, as is the ability to work on your own initiative.
As this is a casual post, we will need a high degree of flexibility regarding the hours/shifts you can work. We are particularly interested in people who can work weekends, evenings and night shifts.
Since a requirement of the role is to provide personal care to vulnerable service users, we would particularly welcome applications from male candidates who are under-represented in this area.
If successful you will need to apply for an enhanced Disclosure.
