Further Information
The Gateshead Housing Company is the largest social housing provider in Gateshead, responsible for the day-to-day management of nearly 20,000 homes, including 38 sheltered accommodation sites on behalf of Gateshead Council.

We are committed to providing customers with the highest quality of service. We believe the key to this is recruiting enthusiastic, talented people with the right skills, knowledge, attitude and behaviour.

An opportunity has arisen in the Older Persons Housing team as a Residential Sheltered Scheme Officer.

We are looking for someone to take up residence at either Pleasant Place Aged Persons Unit in Birtley or West Acres (Bungalow Scheme) in Blaydon. Pleasant Place has 24 two-bed flats, while West Acres has 49 properties (38 one-bed and 11 two-bed bungalows).

Our schemes are designed to meet the needs of older people, and those with disabilities or special needs. Residents require access to services from our Sheltered Scheme Officers (SSOs), who live on-site to help with everyday queries and longer-term solutions, and Mobile Sheltered Scheme Officers (MSSOs) who travel across estates.

Day to day, you will write and monitor individual support plans, carry out welfare checks, deal with housing queries and respond to emergencies on-site.

There is no responsibility to deliver personal care as part of this role, although you will be required to complete cleaning duties in communal areas.

About you
It’s essential you are a dynamic, self-motivated individual who is committed to supporting older people to maintain their independence. You will have a wealth of experience in assisting customers in a wide range of situations, and a strong commitment to excellent customer care, equality, diversity and inclusion.

To succeed in this role, you will need excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to present confidently to groups of customers. It’s important you have a calm, reassuring and empathetic approach, combined with excellent time management skills and a high level of resilience. You must also be able to work on your own initiative.

You must have 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above (including Maths and English) or relevant experience. As this role involves working with ICT, you’ll also need computer skills.

As you will be responsible for facilitating social activities to help residents integrate into the wider community, it’s important you can motivate and engage. Working directly with vulnerable people also means you must have an awareness of safeguarding and health and safety regulations.

Experience of working in older persons services, or supported living, is desirable. It would also be beneficial if you have experience of responding to emergency situations.

For an informal discussion about the role please email Andrew Yates, Older Persons Housing Manager, or call 0191 433 6163
