The Adults & Communities Directorate, consists of three strands, Adult Social Care, Community Development, and Public Health. Our aims are to continue to provide essential and highly valued services and to build capacity to enable local communities to make lasting change, improve quality of life, prosperity and the environment. As a directorate we lead on developing a culture of co-operation and co-production, respecting and nurturing the skills and talents of local people and enabling them to fulfil their potential.


We have four 1yr fixed term Environmental Health Officer posts across the Health Protection Healthcare Quality Service; one in the Environmental Protection Team, two in the Commercial Team and one in the Housing Standards Team. We are looking for officers to work within existing teams as we move out of the pandemic into the recovery phase, picking up work which has been suspended for the last year e.g. programmed Food Hygiene Inspections, as well as responding to ongoing reactive service demands from residents, businesses, elected members, visitors, other council departments, statutory and voluntary sector agencies.

The Environmental Protection Team is responsible for the enforcement of contaminated land, air quality, environmental permitting and statutory nuisance laws.

The Commercial team is responsible for the enforcement of food and health and safety laws and the delivery of port health services on behalf of River Tees Port Health Authority.

The Housing Standards Team is responsible for the enforcement of housing legislation, to ensure that houses are free from serious hazards, are safe and free from public health nuisances Officers provide advice and assistance to owner occupiers, tenants and landlords.

The Service aims to protect public health through the enforcement of relevant laws, by supporting businesses in Redcar and Cleveland to achieve good standards of legal compliance and best practice. The EHO role requires a committed and flexible officer to contribute to delivering the Services range of functions. A successful candidate will be expected to carry out a variety of duties in the team in which they are placed. You must be able to work effectively as part of a team and prioritise and manage personal workloads..

You must have an Environmental Health Degree/Diploma and EHRB Registration. (Commercial Team posts - ideally an applicants should have at least two years’ recent experience in food hygiene enforcement).
