Sunderland Welfare Rights Service is a specialist casework service offering advice and representation in relation to benefits debt and employment on behalf of Sunderland City Council.

We work collaboratively with a range of other providers including our commissioned first tier advice givers.

Fixed term post for 3 years:
The post is funded by West Area Committee. The postholder will work in the West of the City picking up specialist referrals from a range of partners and includes challenging decisions made by the DWP and representation of clients at hearings. Candidates will be expected to represent clients at hearings in relation to a wide range of issues including social security, employment and debt matters at hearings including UAT, County Court and the Employment Tribunal.

Fixed term post for 12 months:
An additional post is required to create capacity in the team for a backlog of tribunal cases created when tribunal activity was suspended during first lockdown. The postholder will pick up cases including tribunals from the existing caseload to support workload management across the team.

The successful candidates in both posts will carry a working case load and have extensive knowledge of providing advice in relation to Welfare Benefits, Debt and Employment up to and including representing clients at Social Security Hearings and Employment Tribunals as well as dealing with County Court procedures in relation to eviction and debt which may include appearing in court with clients.
