Required as soon as possible

Collingwood School and Media Arts College is an all age SEN school situated on the outskirts of Morpeth, Northumberland. The school provides a caring, supportive and inclusive environment which has high expectations and values all members of the school community.
We respect the needs and aspirations of all individuals and provide opportunities for all pupils to make the best possible progress and attain the highest personal achievements.

The school has a tradition of being a caring and friendly environment for children; this ethos stems from the high calibre and commitment of staff and governors where we encourage all children to be enthusiastic and committed learners who aim to develop their confidence, capacity to learn and work independently and collaboratively. In addition to a robust curriculum offer tailored to the needs of the individual we also offer embedded therapeutic interventions, such as speech and language and OT.

The School is looking to appoint a Strategic Business Lead to be responsible for the school’s administrative, premises and financial systems and procedures, ensuring that all legal and safety requirements relating to people and property are met. This includes administering the resources budget, maintaining financial systems, supporting bids for additional funding and overseeing HR and facilities management issues.

The Strategic Business Lead will be part of the Senior Leadership Team, and has reporting responsibilities to Finance Committee of the Governing body. They will line manage a team of support staff, including the site manager and admin team.
We have a range of facilities to provide the very best education that we can for our young people. We have an amazing library, sensory room, sensory garden, our own heated swimming pool, a Personal Education Centre located in a bespoke lodge, a Pupil Support Centre situated in the heart of the school, a Well-being centre, a conference lodge, a Forest school area complete with Roundhouse and a superb media suite with animation, sound and video recording/editing facilities. Collingwood Connect is an outreach service for Collingwood pupils unable to attend full time education. In addition we work with a range of external partners to provide educational opportunities for the pupils. The 6th Form is based at the FUSE at Prudhoe for two days every week. We also offer a CPD programme “The Collingwood Offer” for mainstream schools and external providers. The school is also currently part of an ERASMUS project, working with other Special schools across Europe. Collingwood really is a very special place.

Further information
The role of Strategic Business Lead in this school is a difficult one to pin down. Obviously there is the financial role, from budget monitoring to production of annual Charity accounts, medium term to long term budget forecasting/planning.
In addition to the financial aspects of the school, the SBL is responsible for HR, Health and Safety, site management and contract monitoring.

The school also oversees a charitable trust – The Collingwood Foundation. The SBL is a trustee of the charity.

The school is a vibrant and exciting place to work. There is no ‘ordinary day’. It’s fair to say that the role of Strategic Business Lead is not a 9-5 job, nor does it come with all of the school holidays.

Often in the school holidays, it’s just you, the Site manager and a host of contractors on site to supervise and keep a watchful eye on.

It is a very rewarding job! Whilst not able to directly influence exam results or academic achievements, decisions you take will help to create an environment where the pupils are able to fulfil their potential.

It’s not just the environment that makes it so special. The Senior Leadership Team are committed to making this an outstanding school – they are an inspirational and supportive group to work closely with. Governors too take an active interest in what’s going on and are very supportive.

As for every school, there continues to be an on-going challenge around balancing the budget with ever increasing costs. The school has coped with this challenge over recent years, with very careful day to day management of funds, and our reserves are currently at a strong level.

The staff team that you will be working with are a fantastic group of talented and committed people. You should have a willingness to work with animals as we have a range of animal therapists, including Suzi the school dog!

Please look at our website for further details about the school, Collingwood Connect and the Collingwood Foundation.

Visits are strongly encouraged and will also provide an opportunity to meet the Head teacher to discuss the role. If you wish to arrange a visit please contact the Head teacher’s PA Miss Toole on 01670 516374.
