JOB DESCRIPTION: As an Apprentice Cook your time will be split between a school kitchen, where you will learn how to prepare and serve school meals for up to 300 pupils and teachers, and a Civic kitchen, where you will prepare food for special events such as weddings, Mayor’s functions and much more. In addition to the hands-on experience, you will also gain experience of working in the back office alongside managers and business support officers, to see what it takes to manage 400 staff in 50 different sites across the Borough.

The main duties will include preparing, cooking and serving food along with general catering duties washing up and cleaning within a kitchen. You will work as part of a team ensuring that the quality and safety standards of the kitchen are met.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: All candidates are required to meet the essential requirements set out below. Please address in your application how you meet the following:
• Level 1 English and Maths (GCSE Grade D / 3 or above / Functional Skills) Or An Ability to achieve – Initial Assessment required before job offer.
• Working as part of a team (this could be in a sporting, educational, work or social setting)
• Be articulate and able to converse confidently in a pleasant and professional manner
• Logical thinker to solve problems
• Committed to excellent customer service

APPRENTICESHIP QUALIFICATION: You will be given appropriate paid time off work, to attend College and work towards completion of a Production Chef – Level 2 apprenticeship qualification. PLEASE NOTE: You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in the same or similar subject.

APPRENTICESHIP BENEFITS: We offer an excellent benefits package for apprentices. You will be given a fixed term contract allowing you sufficient time to complete your apprenticeship qualification (see below), with the potential to secure a longer-term position to grow within the organisation. We will provide you with a dedicated Mentor to support you during your apprenticeship and you will also be entitled to a generous annual leave entitlement (Whole time working) as well as access to a number of additional employee benefits and additional learning and development opportunities.

APPRENTICESHIP DURATION: 15 MONTHS

HOURS OF WORK: We have opportunities available for Term Time Only working, working primarily in School Kitchens which would suit those with childcare responsibilities or Whole Time working, requiring individuals to be available for work all year round with ability to take annual leave as approved.

SALARY – dependent on Whole Time (WT) or Term Time Only (TTO) working:
• Under 18 years old, £4.62per hour, £7,226per year (WT), £6,375per year (TTO)
• 18 to 20 years old, £6.56per hour, £10,261per year (WT), £9,052per year (TTO)
• 21 to 22 years old, £8.36per hour, £13,076per year (WT), £11,536per year (TTO)
• 23 years and over, £8.91per hour, £13,937per year (WT), £12,295per year (TTO)
