Social Care - Children Service
Newcastle upon Tyne
Do you have a passion for supporting children and families to achieve their potential? Can you play a key role in our MST Standard Team as an MST Therapist completing intensive work with families?
If so, this opportunity could be for you. We are looking to recruit an MST Therapist. MST Standard is a specialist service that is an important part of Newcastle’s Edge of Care Services, the team is well established and works alongside another MST team in Newcastle.
This is an exciting time to work in children’s services in Newcastle. Through our innovative work as part of the DFE’s Strengthening Families Protecting Children programme (read more about our work with the DfE and Leeds City Council https://www.newcastle.gov.uk/citylife-news/council/ps31m-help-improve-outcomes-newcastle-children) we are implementing the Family Valued approach across our service and city to transform how we work with children, families and partners. Family Valued is a relational and restorative approach to services, focusing on strengths and values. MST will play an important role in these changes through the intensive work we complete with families with some of the most complex issues.
We are looking to recruit an MST Therapist to join our successful MST Standard team in Newcastle. MST Standard is a community-based model directed to older children, teenagers and their families. The approach is targeted at those families where the young person is at risk of coming into care or custody and aims to prevent family breakdown, to reduce offending and to improve educational outcomes.
MST works intensively with children, young people and their families as well as the other systems around the young person. Caseloads are limited to 4-6 families for each therapist. You must be able to participate as part of a 24-hour per day, 7 days per week on-call rota.
We are looking for a practitioner with significant experience of working effectively with young people and families with multiple problems and challenging behaviours. You will be able to evidence considerable success in having engaged hard to reach families. You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be able to remain calm and have the ability to defuse difficult and sometimes volatile situations.
You will ideally have a post-graduate qualification in psychology, social work, counselling or an equivalent professional qualification from a relevant field of child/adolescent or adult/parenting practice. Experience and knowledge in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Family Therapy and/or pragmatic behavioural interventions would be preferred although full training in the MST model will be provided. Therapists receive weekly group supervision from the manager and consultation from MST Services. Applicants with a related undergraduate degree and significant relevant professional experience will be considered.
For more information about MST go to www.mstuk.org or for an informal discussion call Phil Sammut-Smith, MST Manager 0191 2782788/07824836791 or Andrew Burden (Service Manager) on 0191 211 5845
Closing date: 24/6/21
Interview date: 02/07/21
Successful applicants will be expected to attend and successfully complete the MST 6 Day Orientation training (via Microsoft Teams), dates TBC.
As this post involves working with children, vulnerable adults or dealing with sensitive information, written references will be taken up and made available to interviewers before the final selection stage; even if you indicate otherwise.
We are strongly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS disclosure and a range of other recruitment checks.
