Gateshead Council has always been fiercely ambitious for the people of Gateshead, helping it to be a great place to live, work and visit. Led by our five pledges set out in ‘Making Gateshead a place where everyone thrives’, our aim is to ensure all local people can realise their full potential and enjoy the best quality of life.

By putting children and families at the heart of everything we do we can ensure all children within Gateshead can thrive and reach their full potential and live a safe and healthy life.

Gateshead is an Ofsted rated GOOD local authority with a clear and focused ambition to be Outstanding.

Following the retirement of our current post holder, we are looking to appoint a Principal Social Worker to work alongside the Senior Management Team of the Children and Families Social Work service.

You will lead, develop and oversee excellent social work practice across Children Social Work, linking with the council’s corporate workforce development team to ensure that front line staff in both Statutory Social Care and Early Help provision are trained and equipped to deliver a consistent outstanding service and positively contribute to the Gateshead strengths based and systemic practice.

The PSW should lead by example, be visible to the workforce and act as a voice for frontline practitioners to enable change within the organisation. The post holder will have the opportunity to improve social work practice on the front line and creating a direct link between practice and organisational strategy and planning processes.

As such you must hold a Social Work England (SWE) registration and have proven experience of shaping and influencing a culture of productivity and learning and development of strategies to improve the practice of others within a statutory and legislative framework setting.

You must have an exceptional knowledge of Social Work methodologies, theory and best practice and a working knowledge of relevant legislation and case law. Knowledge of the national political and professional context, regulatory processes, inspections and expectations are also essential.

You will have a sound knowledge of child protection system and thresholds, welfare systems and performance and improvement frameworks. You will be adept at, multi agency / partnership working and have a clear commitment to equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice.

This is a unique opportunity to join Gateshead Councils GOOD Children and Families Social Work Service, as rated by Ofsted June 2019.

In addition to a competitive salary we also offer favourable terms and conditions which include membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, up to 29 days annual leave entitlement (plus the opportunity to purchase additional annual leave), and access to a wide range of employee benefits.

If successful, you will need to apply for an enhanced Disclosure.
