Gateshead Council has a dedicated Environmental Protection and Enforcement Team, made up of an Environmental Health Officer, Technical Officer, Scientific Officer and 5 Enforcement Officers. The Team works across a broad range of environmental issues including noise control, environmental permitting, air quality, statutory nuisances, planning and highways enforcement and the illegal disposal of waste.
We have a temporary vacancy until 31 March 2022 for a Technical Officer to work across multiple areas of the team.
You will be involved specifically in resolving complaints associated with commercial or industrial sources and new development including noise and dust, assessing, and responding to planning, licensing, and event plan consultations to minimise their impact on Gateshead residents.
You will be responsible for the investigation of other statutory nuisance complaints such as smoke and odour, pest control infestations and investigating issues associated with planning permission, highway obstructions and wider environmental issues such as fly tipping and taking enforcement action where necessary.
You must have at least 4 GCSEs (Grade C or above including Maths & English, or equivalent), be confident using computers with windows based operating systems and Microsoft Office products, have a full driving licence and be able to demonstrate a knowledge of enforcement practices, local authority noise control and statutory nuisances. Knowledge of the the UK planning system, local authority highways functions and environmental and waste related legislation is desirable. It is essential that you have a strong customer focus and have experience of providing excellent customer service.
