South Tyneside Council Waste Services is based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. The Service is currently undergoing huge transformation to deliver an efficient and effective Waste Service for the Borough. You will be part of a new team and will support the planning and daily operation of the Service.

You will be degree qualified in a relevant subject such as Business, Waste or Environment. You must be keen to commence a career within the Waste Sector and will be given full support and training in order to provide technical support and advice to Waste Services, driving through continuous improvement standards to shape new practices and procedures. You may be expected to undertake further training and qualifications within the Waste Sector.

You will be required to have very strong computer skills and will be key in the introduction and implementation of a new in-cab technology system to the Service, as well as maintaining the system thereafter. Experience of using and maintaining ICT systems, spreadsheets, reporting tools and digital information is essential. You will also have experience of dealing with members of the public and be able to confidently deal with complaints and enquiries. Excellent organisational skills are required as you will manage projects from start to finish and must be confident in preparing and presenting reports.

You will be responsible for delivering a high quality, customer focussed service. You will:

• Regularly monitor all resources to identify opportunities to increase productivity and service standards. To provide technical and innovative solutions to meet the needs of a modern and progressive Waste Service.
• Analyse data and produce accurate reports to enhance performance across the service.
• Act as a recycling ambassador, for example managing projects, increasing recycling levels and reducing contamination (i.e. by educating the public, schools, crew), looking at rejected load data to provide recommendations for improvement.
• Monitor productivity for the Recycling Village in order to recommend solutions for service improvements and efficiencies.
• Project manage the introduction of paid for services to the Borough and ensure timely and effective implementation.
• Help procure, implement, manage and use ICT systems such as in cab solutions, Routesmart and other relevant systems to support the effective and efficient service delivery and optimisation of refuse route scheduling.
• Act in an advisory capacity for waste issues, exploring options available and recommending effective solutions.
• Assist in the monitoring, management and review of Health and Safety in the Section and across all aspects of the service, including maintenance of risk registers and safe systems of work as appropriate to ensure that health and safety and working procedures are within current and anticipated legislation/guidance and promote best industry practice.
• Write and review safe systems of work and risk assessments.
