Children & Young People’s Services in County Durham prides itself on delivering outstanding care to our children and young people. This is an exciting time to join the Children’s Residential Service as we expand our service provision in order to provide the best outcomes for children and young people in County Durham.
We are expanding our workforce and have recently introduced the Deputy Manager position.

The Role
The Deputy Manager will work in partnership with the Registered Homes Manager to model best practice and lead on interventions to train and develop others as required. You will be part of an aspirational culture and approach to improve and develop the Children’s Residential Service to achieve its vision of providing high quality care and support to children, young people and their families as stated in the Children’s Homes Statement of Purpose.

You will join us at an exciting time as we expand our services, developing registered children’s homes across our beautiful county which can meet the individual needs of our children and young people, creating teams who we will actively invest in. Our staff receive regular support and are skilled in trauma-informed approaches to work, helping to ensure that our children and young people enjoy their childhoods, developing through education and via meaningful relationships.

As a Deputy Manager with Durham County Council, you can expect a thorough and supportive induction, a suite of training and professional development opportunities and the expectation that you will actively and positively contribute, not only to our five-year development plan, but to the lives of our wonderful children and their families.

Expectations of the post
The successful candidate will have a demonstrable knowledge of the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015, and their application, as well as experience of Ofsted inspections. You should have an appreciation of the importance of evidence-based practice and research in relation to children and young people in our care.

You will play a pivotal role in the development and planning of the service, training of the team, and the delivery of an aspirational an innovative service, with a view to ensure continuous improvement and development.

You can demonstrate your proven people management skills within a residential setting, including experience of supervision, appraisal, training and development, HR practices and procedures and quality assurance tools. You will also demonstrate exceptional communications skills and the ability to support and develop the team.

The service places a necessary emphasis on supervision and the continuous professional development of the successful post holder and the wider team. We are committed to the development of our employees and offering creative and innovative training opportunities.

Skills and experience
This role requires an enthusiastic, innovative and relational practitioner, who will provide a home and working environment where the needs and aspirations of our young people are of primary focus. Our teams will be enabled and empowered to deliver exceptional care and support.

We are looking for someone who:
• Puts children and young people at the centre of everything we do
• Is committed to exceptional service delivery
• Has proven leadership and management experience
• Significant experience in a residential childcare setting
• Has knowledge and understanding of the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015 and experience of regulatory inspections including Ofsted and Regulation 44
• Has knowledge of evidence-based practice and research in relation to looked after children and experience of regulatory inspections including Ofsted and Regulation 44

Your expertise should come with relevant professional qualifications including:
• Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or equivalent
• Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare or equivalent or have significant experience in a role requiring the supervision and management of staff working in a care role and commit to attaining the Level 5 Diploma within 1 year of commencing in post
