About hopespring:

hopespring is a charity working with the most vulnerable young people across the region of Tyne and Wear.

With a highly committed team of trained staff and volunteers, we provide support and care for some of the most vulnerable people in society through our people-based interventions. We have various full-time projects that seek to bring interventions wherever they are needed the most.

The charity focuses largely on children, mental health and the therapeutic education of the most vulnerable.

Project Context:

hopespring has operated an independent therapeutic school in Newcastle since the spring of 2013 with places for 12 of the most vulnerable and emotionally/behaviourally complex young people who are at risk of, or have already been, excluded from school or from their alternative provision.

A second school was opened in Sunderland and has been running since 2019. Both schools are independently registered with Ofsted, having an outstanding reputation working alongside schools, local authorities and other supporting agencies to help bring about transformation in the lives of young people who have experienced serious difficulties in mainstream education.


Responsibilities:

• Work in partnership with the Headteacher/ Senior Therapist and senior staff in the planning, resourcing and delivery of sessions and programmes for the young people. This may involve occasional after school activities, including celebration evenings.

• Plan and delivery of lessons; leading small group sessions as timetabled and providing 1-1 support as appropriate to bring excellence to the young people’s learning experience.

• Work alongside senior staff as part of a team that works closely together to support the young people in that class and act as a link person for their families.

• Assist in team-teaching including preparation of sessions when directed by the Centre Manager.

• Share in identifying individual development needs of students and establishing Individual Educational Plans to appropriately meet these needs.

• Support senior staff to ensure the suitability of the environment, facilities and premises in line with Health and Safety Policy.

• Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons with whom you may come into contact with.

• Support the effective operation of school systems and encourage and support young people to engage fully in all aspects of their individual programmes including extracurricular activities.

• Work as a team to help in tackling issues such as poor behaviour, child protection, substance abuse and other social issues that prevent whole person development.

• Foster and develop relationships with parents or carers and encourage active involvement with their child's programme.

• Represent hopespring Education centres appropriately when dealing with external agencies, including preparing for and attending external meetings relating to the young person, such as CTMs, PEPs, LAC Reviews and emergency professionals-only meetings.

• Administration of various records and monitoring outcomes as required e.g.: registration, assessment, moderation, progress tracking and certification.

• Participate fully in all developmental opportunities including staff training and staff meetings.

• Engage with internal and external training opportunities to further develop classroom practice.

• Take on additional responsibilities for specific tasks as your role develops as directed by the Centre Manager.


Essential Skills:

• Good self-reflection skills and the capacity to adapt their own interpersonal and communication styles to meet communication needs of students/staff around them.

• Ability to relate to people from a variety of backgrounds and put them at ease.

• Understand broad issues impacting young person’s ability to participate in learning and self improvement.

• Possess proven skills and strategies for engaging effectively with young people and supporters/carers in achieving recognisable outcomes.

• Engaging young people within a classroom setting and out of hour’s school provision.

• Some knowledge of the issues facing the community in which the centre is based.

• To possess good communication; effective written, verbal and listening skills.

• Positive approach to managing young people’s behaviour.

• Ability to act as a positive role model.

• Effective time management and ability to organise and prioritise own workload and keep to deadlines.

• Evidence of effective ICT skills.

• Ability to work as part of a team and deliver outcomes as directed by a senior member of staff.


Essential Experience:

• A minimum of one year's relevant youth work, mentoring or classroom experience.

• Proven track record of working with young people aged 11-16 years.

• Preferably has at least 1 years’ experience of engaging effectively with young people in a school/ education setting.

Essential Qualifications:

• Good general standard of education including as a minimum English, Mathematics GCSE at grade A*-C or equivalent.

• Preferably has a relevant degree or level 3 qualification.

• Preferably has an appropriate teaching or lifelong learning qualification or be willing to work towards one.
