Post title: Specialist Support Worker for children with a vision impairment

Salary: £22,129 - £24,920 Grade 6 pro-rata to hours worked

Job Location: Your normal place of work will be Durham Leadership Centre, Spennymoor, but you may be required to work at any Council workplace within County Durham.

We are looking to recruit a Specialist Support Worker for our service supporting children and young people with a vision impairment across County Durham so children can access their education in their local community. We are looking for someone with experience of working with children and young people with SEND, and / or a Vision Impairment within an educational setting. The role will be to facilitate access to the curriculum and whole school environment across primary and secondary mainstream settings, ensuring safety and inclusion as well as promoting positive social skills and independence.

Technology is an increasing part of this role, and a good working knowledge of IT is preferable, as well as an interest in keeping up with developments within this field. You need to be confident using mainstream equipment (laptops and ipads) to develop pupil’s competence and independence in their use of ICT. Also, you would need to have an interest in developing your own skills using specialist technology to enable you to support children with a profound vision impairment access their education.

We are seeking someone who is flexible and has practical skills to adapt and modify materials to meet individual needs and work in co-operation with the subject and specialist teachers of the vision impaired. This will involve the preparation and organisation of adapted resources including large print, Braille and auditory materials. Specialist Support Workers will be given the opportunity to develop these specific skills, and to increase their personal knowledge and professional development in this varied specialist role, which includes learning Braille.
