Do you have a passion for being hands-on, working outside and contributing towards a clean, green and attractive environment? Do you enjoy being kept busy with new challenges?

If the answer is yes, we have a fantastic opportunity for you.

The city of Sunderland is currently going through a transformation to deliver it’s 2030 city plan, to create a cleaner, greener and more attractive city. The city is proud to be home to five Green Flag parks and to have Blue Flag standard at our seaside resorts, and you could be part of this.

Sunderland City Council’s Environmental Services Team is looking to recruit a number of committed, enthusiastic and energetic Environmental Services Technicians to join their Local Services Team.

You will be expected to work in all aspects of environmental maintenance across the city, with a particular focus on street cleansing and aspects of grounds maintenance to deliver excellence across these sectors. You will be a positive influence on other colleagues, including apprentices and those further developing their skills.

You will play a key role within the Environmental Services Team, to assist in the successful development, delivery, and ongoing commitment to the city’s streets, beaches, parks and open spaces. You will also be involved in facilitating the delivery of projects by colleagues and partners to support delivery of the Environmental Services Service Plan.

Applicants should hold a valid UK driving licence, and those with the qualification to drive up to 7.5 ton with a valid CPC card would be highly desirable. It would be beneficial for applicants to be experienced in the use of a variety of hand tools and equipment relating to grounds maintenance and horticulture, as well as any cleansing related experience.

The Environmental Services team delivers an essential 24 hours, 365 days a year service. Working opportunities will include a variety of shift patterns, for example, working “4 days on, 4 days off” with possible pay enhancements, or working as part of a “5 out of 7” per week rota. All opportunities will include weekend working, some unsociable hours and evening work. There are also a variety of permanent and fixed term opportunities available.
