Further Information
Do you want to use your care skills/experience to work from home?

If you want to make a difference and help adults and young people with additional needs to have short breaks, then Shared Lives could be for you. Our CQC rated Outstanding scheme urgently requires more respite Providers. You need to have a spare bedroom, a safe, clean and comfortable home, a caring personality and the desire to make a difference.

We support adults and young people from age 16. The majority of the people we support have a learning disability and can have additional health needs, which can include the requirement to support with epilepsy and medication administration. Whilst comprehensive training will be provided, you will need to be able to demonstrate how your previous experience will equip you to meet the needs of adults using our service. The ability to provide personal care is essential.

We are looking for Shared Lives providers across the Durham area. We welcome people from all walks of life, including:
  • all ages (over 18)
  • all backgrounds and ethnic groups
  • all sexual orientations
  • who are single, married or living with a partner
  • who have, or don't have, children
  • who own their own home or live in rented accommodation
  • who are employed, unemployed or retired

Shared Lives Providers work on a self employed basis. A special form of tax relief, Qualifying Care Relief, is available to people who provide Shared Lives care.

We recognise the difficulties in giving up employment, and therefore we are pleased to be able to offer a 12 month temporary contract to provide respite.

You will be matched with a number of adults during this time. Beyond your contract you are expected to provide respite to the service for a minimum of 12 months, and you will be supported to have ongoing respite bookings in preparation for this.

The contract is based on providing respite to 1 adult at a time for 42 weeks, with 10 weeks holiday. Additional payments will be made for respite which exceeds this, payable at a rate of up to £506.80 per week.

Shared Lives Plus highlight the advantages of being self employed, “You’re providing support from your own home and creating a way of life that suits you and the person you support. Since you’re not employed by either your local Shared Lives scheme, or by the person you support, you can build a more relaxed relationship which feels more like family”.
