About the role….

Two vacancies have arisen within the in-house Highway Team who deliver the day to day maintenance of the highways and footway networks within Gateshead.


We seek reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic individuals to join our successful team to deliver a range of projects from small scale patching, drainage and footway repairs together with general highway construction and maintenance works.

 

The requirement of a Roadman, Chargehand has the responsibility of supervising others, meeting demands and completing works orders and client requests in a timely manner. The role is aimed at a flexible, responsive and high achieving individual, installing, repairing and fabricating items. Ensuring availability and functioning of required items/materials. Ensuring the machinery and equipment is well maintained, with good housekeeping on site and ensuring Health and Safety standards are adhered to.

 

The Highways Team have a strong ‘can do’ attitude which is focussed on delivering high standards of work to all highway users.


Candidates must be able to demonstrate a proven track record of working in the highway maintenance or construction industry together with a forward thinking attitude to ensure the service continues to build on its previous successes. A full, clean driving licence is desirable with Category C entitlement.


A NRSWA Operative certificate is desirable as is knowledge and experience of Construction Health and Safety legislation in relation to highways works.


The vacancy is available at the Highways depot at Shearlegs Road. You will work a standard 37 hour week, Monday to Friday.

You must have…

Knowledge of:

A broad knowledge of highways works including traffic management, drainage, street lighting and signage

 

Experience of:

Trade background with relevant on-site work experience ideally with some experience of supervising others.
Experience of working with a wide range of highways materials.
Operation of specialist plant and machinery.
Working in a self-disciplined manner to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of workmanship
Effective communication with clients to ensure specification and requirements are met.
Experience of working to the requirements of the highways permit scheme

 

Qualifications:

NVQ or equivalent in relevant trade background.
Current CSCS Health and Safety Compliance Card or equivalent
Hold relevant skill and H&S qualifications to operate relevant plant and machinery.
Hold or be willing to work towards

   Water Jetting

   Trenching & Shoring

   Confined Spaces

Sling Loading from a vehicle, or be willing to work towards
