The team…
The Low Incidence Needs Team (LINT) is part of the SEN Inclusion Team and includes the areas of hearing, vision, multi-sensory impairment and physical and/or medical needs, all of which provide support to pre-school children and young people in education aged (0-25) with sensory impairment in Gateshead.
Specialist teachers and support staff hold the necessary mandatory qualifications in the areas of:
Hearing impairment (HI)
Vision impairment (VI)
Multi-sensory impairment (MSI)
Physical and/or medical needs (PMN)
LINT provide services which may include home teaching for pre-school children and teaching support for school-age children and young people, information and advice on a child or young person’s sensory impairment or physical/medical needs and its implications, support with hearing/vision assessments and technologies, assistance with access to specialist equipment, teaching in sign language and Braille if appropriate and supporting access to participation in leisure and social activities outside of school.
About the role…
We are looking to appoint a specialist sensory teaching assistant to join the Special Educational Needs Improvement Team (SENIT) and provide peripatetic/outreach support to children and young people aged 0 -25 years with sensory impairment.
You must have HLTA or equivalent qualification with an understanding of the impact of hearing loss upon aspects of learning, language development and access to the curriculum.
Ideally you should have some experience of using BSL, however, the expectation is that you achieve BSL level 3 within 3 years of appointment. You will have knowledge of national/early years curriculum and other learning programmes and strategies.
The focus of the role will be working with deaf and hearing impaired children and young people in schools and settings across Gateshead.
You should have successful experience of working in educational settings, maintaining and supporting the use of hearing technologies such as hearing aids, cochlear implants etc. You should be confident in the effective use of IT to maintain records and support learning.
You should have knowledge of the requirements for Safeguarding and Child Protection.
Candidates who do not hold the BSL Level 3 qualification will be considered but must be willing to undertake training.
You must hold a current driver’s license and have access to a car or means to mobility support.
If successful, you will have to apply for an enhanced Disclosure.
