The work going on behind the scenes of North Tyneside Council is broad and varied, therefore many of our apprenticeship opportunities are in business administration.
This will be the fifth year we have identified more opportunities in business administration due to the success of previous apprentices who are now employed.
A business administration apprentice will carry out general office tasks such as creating documents, arranging meetings, sending emails, and handling telephone calls. Each of our admin posts is based with a different team in the council each with their own distinct function. Some will be based at the Council’s headquarters on Cobalt Business Park while others will work from different locations in the borough.
Each of our apprentices is fully supported by the team around them with a named mentor and manager. As an apprentice with North Tyneside Council, you will learn skills, gain experience and knowledge and achieve a recognised qualification.
All posts are fixed term for 18 months.
Our admin vacancies are in the following teams:
“New Beginnings”, part of the housing service
Based at Purley Close, Howdon
New Beginnings is a scheme which provides supported accommodation at Purley Close for young parents and pregnant women aged 16-25. You will work as part of a small admin team working in the office attached to the accommodation units. In addition to general admin duties, you’ll help staff a busy reception point and be the first point of contact for the public and the families the scheme supports. During your apprenticeship you will also spend time supporting the admin of the Temporary Accommodation service. This supports vulnerable families who are assisted through the housing advice/homeless serviceVsupport to help social workers and other professionals advise and support adults with their social care needs.
CAREpoint, part of adult social care
Based at North Tyneside General Hospital
The CARE Point team is made up of health and social care staff who provide multidisciplinary assessment to people either in their owns homes or in hospital who may need support, therapy, equipment or medical review. You will be trained to take and process referrals using a variety of processes and computer systems. You will also learn a wide range of general administration skills. This is an extremely busy team but the experience you will gain from both a Council and Health perspective will be invaluable in supporting you on your future career path..
Business Support, with Environment, Housing and Leisure
Based at the Council Head Quarters, Cobalt Business Park
The Business Support Team supports the Environment, Housing & Leisure teams in North Tyneside Council. This service area has over 1000 employees and covers a huge range of different services including our leisure centres & libraries, housing of over 15,000 homes and the maintenance of over 135,000 flower beds and 13.5 million square feet of grassed areas, open spaces, highway verges, cricket fields, sports pitches and bowling greens.
The team provides the administrative support to these wide ranging areas which means that the work can vary greatly and can include opportunities to get out and about in the borough.
The diverse nature of our service and the work involved will provide some great opportunities, experience and insight into the workings of a large organisations and the wider role of North Tyneside Council in the community.
Deprivation of Liberty in Adult Social Care
Based at the Council Headquarters, Cobalt Business Park
The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Team is a small, friendly and welcoming team which administrates a legal process to make sure vulnerable adults, who aren’t able to chose where they live and the care they need, are looked after by this legal process.
The administration process for this team is very formal, structured and organised from beginning to end. You will be shown how to use a wide range of systems and different electronic devices i.e. printers and photocopiers on a daily basis. There will also be a high level of support provided from Team Members to help you gain the best skills and knowledge from your experience.
Prevention, Early Intervention and Support (2 vacancies)
Based with the locality teams.
Our locality teams offer early help services to families who will benefit from additional support. You will be initially based within one of the teams but will be expected to rotate across all teams (Coast, Central, North West and South West) and support the work of other members of the teams. This admin role will include reception duties.
Childrens Services
Based at the Council Headquarters, Cobalt Business Park
North Tyneside Council Children’s Services and its Front Door Service provide access to all services for children and families in North Tyneside. The team is the first point of contact and deals with concerns about the safety or welfare of a child in North Tyneside. The varied administration work you will undertake will be an opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge of children’s social care within a busy local authority. You will gain a good understanding in key areas of Children’s Services and help the team in applying procedures and processes..
Housing Growth, with Environment, Housing and Leisure
Based at the Council Head Quarters, Cobalt Business Park.
The Housing Growth team is responsible for delivering 3,000 new affordable homes across North Tyneside as well as running several major construction projects. You will be based in a busy team providing administrative support on a number of exciting and challenging projects including building new homes for sale, helping with marketing and communications and preparing reports and presentations.
With our support, you will learn all about project management, train to use new IT systems and have the opportunity to get out of the office, visit construction sites, meet customers and a have a load of other interesting new experiences.
Property Services, with Environment, Housing and Leisure
Based at the Council Head Quarters, Cobalt Business Park. .
This team also supports the council’s Environment, Housing and Leisure service. We look after the repair, maintenance and new build of council property. You will be trained to carry out the administrative tasks to support this work but will also have the opportunity to visit construction sites and tenants’ homes to gain an insight into how the work is managed and delivered.
School Improvement Service, part of the Education, Learning and Skills Service
Based at the Langdale Centre, Howdon
The Education, Learning and Skills team is made up of professionals who advise and support school staff, young people and parents with their needs. You will work as part of a team assisting professional staff with admin support on projects and processes to ensure the efficient delivery of support and advice to schools and customers.

What will happen next?
• Your application will be considered for all 10 admin posts.
• If shortlisted, you will be invited to the Council Head Quarters to meet managers, our training provider and current apprentices. You’ll find out more about each team and have the opportunity to express any preferences for any of the opportunities. This will be on the 27th June.
• On 16th July you’ll be invited back for basic skills tests in literacy and numeracy and an interview with 2 of the recruiting managers.
• If you’re offered an apprenticeship you will start on 3rd September this year.
