Durham County Council is seeking to appoint a motivated, passionate and highly skilled candidate to become the first joint appointment between public health and culture & sport at a senior management level.

The post holder will be responsible for driving forward key aspects of the culture & sport and public health strategic priorities and motivating the team of staff to deliver against the set priorities. They will actively contribute to the wider culture and sport and public health senior management teams and will lead by example in terms of embedding the vision, values and behaviours of the council.

Working to address health inequalities, the successful candidate will have substantial public health knowledge and an understanding of the role culture and sport can make in addressing issues of wellbeing. With demonstrable leadership and partnership skills the successful candidate will need to demonstrate their ability to deliver wellbeing outcomes through an innate understanding of how sport, leisure, museums, libraries and arts services can contribute to the wellbeing agenda. An excellent track record of collaborative working with primary and secondary care colleagues as well as the voluntary and community sector is a priority. Understanding all aspects of the local authority remit and statutory responsibilities for public health will be required. Exemplary analytical and communication skills are essential to be able to influence the wider system and engage partners in understanding their role in population health improvement. Ensuring all aspects of culture & sport are focused on improving the health of the population and making every contact count is a key outcome for this post holder.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Promotion or related field
Management qualification
Registered or working towards inclusion on the UKPH register
