We are seeking a Finds Liaison Assistant to work alongside and assist the existing Finds Liaison Officer as part of the Archaeology Section in Durham County Council, to advance understanding of the historic environment in the North East of England with specific responsibility for the local authority areas of Darlington, County Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton, by encouraging participation in the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). The successful candidate will assist in the operation and development of the PAS, identifying and recording archaeological objects found by members of the public and making the results accessible to all. In addition, the Assistant will undertake work on specific projects related to the identification and recording of lithic assemblages.

Candidates should hold a minimum of 4 GCSEs (graded A-c) including English Language or Literature or equivalent in a related subject together with experience of working with a wide range of people from different backgrounds and levels of understanding. A degree or postgraduate qualification in Archaeology or a related discipline are desirable.

The successful candidate will have an interest and enthusiasm for research and archaeology preferably with experience of artefact identification or of working within an archaeological organisation. They will be highly motivated, and possess excellent communication skills, enabling them to assist in the promotion of the Scheme and engage in outreach activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of recording finds and the value of the information collected at the local, regional, and national level. Experience of working with a computer database is essential, whereas an awareness of issues relating to metal-detecting, Treasure legislation and archaeology are desirable.

The post will be based within the Archaeology Section of Durham County Council, in County Hall, Durham City. The nature of the job means it will occasionally be necessary to attend events and/or meetings that may be held in the evening and at weekends at other sites and venues.

This post is funded by the Headley Trust, via the Portable Antiquities Scheme and Durham County Council. Please note that previous Headley Trust post holders are not eligible to apply.
