Permanent/Full Time

Located at the heart of Weardale, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Wolsingham School is approximately 15 minutes’ drive west of Durham. The school is set in extensive grounds, having benefited from a new building in April 2016. Our school is known for academic excellence, a rich extra-curricular life, an emphasis on character and citizenship, and exceptional pastoral care. We are looking to appoint Head of House, preferably with a PE Specialism from 6th January 2020.

Our pastoral system is based around four Houses, each of which is organised into vertical tutor groups. Houses each have an identity and compete in sport and other activities. The Head of House builds team spirit, strives to know every child and their family, sets the standards for behaviour and achievement and ensures that students develop in a comfortable and safe environment. Our students are very well behaved. This is because we are proactive: we create a positive environment, stop issues before they become problems and solve problems ourselves. We thus have extraordinarily low rates of exclusion. Our students know they are looked after and are loyal to the school.

We are seeking to appoint a Head of House who fits with the ethos of our school and is passionate about pastoral care and high standards. Because the current postholder, who leaves in January to pursue career development, is also a PE teacher, we have a strong preference for a highly skilled and able PE teacher.

Head of House Duties

• To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the House group and to monitor and support student progress.
• To be accountable for student progress and development within the House group.
• To develop and enhance the teaching/pastoral practice of form tutors and co tutors.
• To ensure the provision of pastoral support for students in year 7 – 11 within the House group is in accordance with the aims of the school and the pastoral/curricular policies determined by the Governing Body and Headteacher of the school.
• To be accountable for leading, managing and developing the House group and building House identity.
• To assist in effective management and deployment of form tutors and Head of House Assistants, as well as financial and physical resources within the pastoral system to support the House.
• To support and contribute to the implementation and tracking effectiveness of vertical tutoring.

Teacher Duties

• To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum area as appropriate.
• To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students as a teacher/ Form Tutor.
• To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential.
• To contribute to raising standards of student attainment.

Where our roles are customer facing and you are required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
