Post: Bilingual Education Officer
Grade: Grade 7, £23,541 - £27,041 pro rata per annum

Bilingual Dari/Pashto/English Education Officer - all Key Stages, 0.5fte (18.5hrs) term time only, temporary until 31st December 2022.

We wish to appoint a part-time, Bilingual Education Officer (Dari, Pashto & English) for the EAL team to provide support to pupils speaking Dari/Pashto as their first language and who are learning English as an additional language (EAL) in school.

The EAL team promotes inclusion and equality of opportunity. This post is an excellent opportunity to join a small, high functioning team to focus on supporting Afghan pupils speaking Dari or Pashto who are learning EAL.

You will deliver intervention support and collaborate with teaching staff in schools to ensure those Dari/Pashto-speaking pupils at risk of underachievement are supported and monitored. You will work across all key stages, assisting schools with home/ school liaison with pupils and families. Home school liaison and home visits are integral to the post.
This peripatetic post involves working in any school across the county, moving between schools during the day. Independent travel is a requirement to fulfil the duties of the post for which mileage is paid. Within the work, there is a strong focus on safeguarding and reducing inequalities.

Required Qualifications: Educated to degree or equivalent. Excellent literacy and oral skills in Pashto and Dari, fluent English speaker with interpreting experience.

Are you a good team player? Do you have experience of supporting children’s educational achievement? Do you have a pro-active, reflective approach to your work? Do you have a genuine commitment to equalities? If so, we would welcome your application.

For further information about the post please contact Maria Callaghan on 07919291252 or maria.callaghan@durham.gov.uk.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held on 15th December 2021.

As a disability confident employer, we are committed to employing disabled people and people with health conditions making reasonable adjustments to support disabled applicants when required.

Standard term time only pay is calculated on the basis of the following:

• Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 38 weeks; plus
• Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days); plus
• Individual leave entitlement - 5.2 weeks (26 days) or 6.2 weeks (31 days)
Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less than 5 years’ service will receive 26 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will receive
31 days annual leave. For example:

Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service:
38 weeks (term time) + 26 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 44.8 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service:
38 weeks (term time) + 31 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 45.8 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
