Further Information
An exciting opportunity has arisen to support the development and maintenance of the Walled Kitchen Garden and Orchard at Preston Park Museum, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s flagship heritage location.
Preston Park Museum and Grounds (PPMG) is the most visited paid for attraction in the Tees Valley, attracting 200,000 visits to the Hall and over 700,000 to the Park every year. The 110 acre setting for the listed Hall includes café, play areas, skate-park, woodland walks and independent attractions like Butterfly World, Tees Small Gauge Railway and Rivershack Boat Hire.
The post of Assistant Kitchen Gardener will take a hands-on role in the typical Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden, utilising plant varieties and horticultural methods typical of the period. The area, over approximately 2 acres, contains a vinehouse, glasshouse, gardener’s bothy and a heritage orchard. You will also assist in the care and maintenance of the Winter Garden area of the museum.
As Assistant Gardener you will support the Kitchen Gardener in leading a dedicated team of volunteers to develop and maintain this integral part of the Museum experience. Your role will be physically demanding and hands on, including the propagation and growing of heritage vegetables and flowers, and the maintenance of soft fruits and woody perennials. The role will include other associated gardening tasks, including digging, soil preparation, weeding, watering, pruning, and ensuring a high standard of presentation is maintained. This role also includes interacting with a wide range of visitors, including schools and community groups.
