An opportunity has arisen for a Casual Assistant Ranger within the Parks and Countryside Team.
Wharton Park is a 19th century park located just outside Durham City centre. Following an Heritage Lottery funded restoration in 2016 the park now offers a heritage centre with education room and café along with green gym, play areas, miniature car track and putting green which you will assist in managing as part of this role. Wharton Park’s opening hours range from 09:00 – 19:00 and work on a seasonal rota.
You will be required to undertake all aspects of park and countryside management. This includes site inspections, routine practical maintenance, assisting volunteers and alongside education sessions and events ensuring a positive profile of Durham County Council’s Parks and Countryside Estate. Other duties include responsibility for the security, general maintenance and cleaning within the heritage centre. Additionally, Durham County Council’s countryside service manages a further 50+ sites across County Durham which includes LNR’s, Railway path network, SSSI’s and picnic areas managed by a team of site based rangers.
This role will include weekend and shift working including bank holidays when needed.
Required Qualifications:
NVQ level 3 in countryside management or directly related subject

Due to the requirement to drive a County Council vehicle in this role, appointment will be subject to the production of a valid driving licence for the required category of vehicle and the satisfactory completion of an in-house Driver Induction Assessment.
