The Trading Standards team has an essential role in maintaining and developing Sunderland as a well-regulated, compliant and safe place to live, work, visit and do business, and we are now recruiting to a Consumer Protection Officer post within the team.

Successful applicants will have experience of conducting investigations involving the gathering, processing and presentation of evidence and intelligence to produce prosecution reports. Experience of working with partner organisations to achieve service objectives will be vital as the role will involve collaborative working. Alternatively you will have similar skills or experience which is transferable to this role.

Once in position a broad range of Trading Standards investigations will be undertaken. You will play a crucial role in intelligence led criminal investigations into most aspects of Trading Standards enforcement including tackling rogue traders and stemming the supply of counterfeit goods and illicit tobacco as well as aspects of animal health and companion animal licensing.

Candidates must have the drive, initiative and necessary technical and analytic skills to gather and process intelligence to deliver successful outcomes to their investigations.

You will need to be a strong team player and have the necessary skills and experience to contribute fully to complex investigations and support our joint working with partners such as the Police, Licensing services, the Gambling Commission and HMRC.

Excellent communication skills together with the ability to listen, negotiate, influence and work independently to complete the task are required.

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
