Further Information
We are offering an exciting opportunity to join Newcastle City Council’s Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) team.
In 2022, in partnership with Newcastle University, we were successful in our bid to the National Institute for Health & Care Research (NIHR) to establish a HDRC.
About HDRC Newcastle
Stable employment, quality housing, good schools, accessible green space, safe neighbourhoods, and inclusive communities are all associated with good health.
The ambition of the HDRC is to strengthen research culture in local government, to deepen a useful evidence base on the wider determinants, or drivers, of health and how local governments can influence them.
Supporting council services to better understand the important role they play in the health and wellbeing of Newcastle, and make positive changes to policies and services that reduce health inequality and promote health equity is at the heart of what we do.
Data Scientist Role
We are looking for a data scientist who shares our ambition and wants to use their skills and experience to make a difference to the lives of those who live and work in the city.
As a data scientist within our team, you would be expected to:
Collaborate with Council colleagues and wider stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges and identify opportunities where data science could add value and influence the wider determinants of health to reduce health inequalities.
Perform data linkage and integration across multiple data sources and platforms, using appropriate methods and tools to ensure data quality and consistency.
Preprocess and explore datasets from city council services; and apply advanced statistical and machine learning methods to uncover patterns and trends, create tools, and develop predictive models for forecasting and decision-making.
Communicate complex algorithms, methods, and results effectively to different audiences and levels of technical expertise, using appropriate language, visualisations, and formats. Ensure training materials and documentation for data science tools are clear and provide step-by-step guides to facilitate ease of use.
Help shape the vision and the direction of data science within the organisation by being part of a strategic effort to promote and embed data science as a core function and asset for the council.
Play a key role in developing data science capability and culture within the council, by sharing best practices, delivering training, and mentoring other staff.
