Newcastle’s Children’s Safeguarding Unit is looking to appoint a full time Independent Reviewing Officer. You will be responsible for providing continuous independent oversight of the plans in place for children subject to Child Protection Plans and those Looked After by the Local Authority. The primary aims of the role are to ensure the child’s voice is heard within the care planning and review process, ensuring appropriate plans are in place and that they are implemented effectively within a timeframe that meets the child’s needs. In addition you will support a range of other complex meetings and contribute to local and national performance monitoring and development agendas, helping to ensure those children most at risk achieve the best possible outcomes.

Newcastle is an exciting and challenging place to work for those interested in the provision of children’s services. We have recently restructured our long term social work teams based on learning from our 2-year Family Insights programme. This has enabled Newcastle to take part in innovative approaches centred on the reclaiming social work model which places systemic practice at the heart of our approach. We have also adopted the Signs of Safety as our primary approach for working with children and families within the child protection arena.

We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. If you are successful we will undertake additional recruitment checks which will include a check to see if you have had any criminal convictions, a check of police information and we will check the relevant barred list(s). It is a criminal offence for a barred individual to apply for a job in regulated activity. A commitment to helping maintain the existing excellent standards of the Unit, and the Independent Reviewing Team, in meeting our statutory responsibilities is essential.

You must be a qualified child care social worker, have a minimum of 3 years post qualifying experience in child protection and some managerial/supervisory experience.

For an informal discussion, please contact Stafford Devine, Acting Service Manager Children’s Safeguarding Standards Unit or Heather Jenkins, IRO Group Manager on 0191 277 3646.

Apply online at www.northeastjobs.org.uk.

As this post involves working with children, vulnerable adults or dealing with sensitive information, written references will be taken up and made available to interviewers before the final selection stage; even if you indicate otherwise.
