Job Role:
To assist in promoting the learning and personal development of the pupils to whom you are assigned, to enable them to make best use of the educational opportunities available to them. Prior experience of working with children with SEND is essential.

Duties and responsibilities:
To aid the pupil(s) to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on their own by, for example:
? Clarifying and explaining instructions
? Support in intimate care and administering medication where necessary.
? Ensuring the pupil is able to use equipment and materials provided
? Motivating and encouraging the pupil(s) as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils’ needs
? Assisting in identified areas of need, e.g. speech and language, reading, spelling, numeracy, handwriting/presentation etc
? Using praise, commentary and assistance to encourage the pupil to concentrate and stay on task
? Liaising with class teacher, SENCO and other professionals about individual support plans , contributing to the planning and delivery as appropriate
? Providing additional nurture to individuals when requested by the class teacher or SENCO
? Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies
? Helping to make appropriate resources to support the pupil.

General Requirements
• Attending and participating in training and development courses as required.
• Needs to have a good level of spoken English
• Attend meetings, liaise and communicate with colleagues in the school
• Being an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected of pupils.
• Having due regard to confidentiality, child protection procedures, health and safety, other statutory requirements and the policies of the governing body and local education authority.

To carry out the above duties in accordance with the Education Department’s Equal Opportunities Policy. The post holder must:
• Act in compliance with the data protection principles in respecting the privacy of personal information held by the council.
• Comply with the principles of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in relation to management of Council records and information.
• Carry out their duties with full regard to the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy, Code of Conduct, Child Protection Policy and all other Council policies.
• Comply with the Council’s Health and safety rules and regulations and Health and Safety Legislation.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a criminal record check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
