The Environmental Enforcement team is a new team being developed within the Development, Transport and Public Protection service of Communities & Environment, a new role is to be created that will provide the day to day supervision of up to 15 frontline enforcement officers working a shift pattern that covers evenings and weekends.

Your day will be spent mostly outside, in all weathers, walking up to 10 miles per day, so please consider this before you apply. You will be dealing with members of the public face-to-face, so this sort of interaction must be something you are comfortable with, sometimes in difficult situations therefore experience of dealing with difficult situations is essential.

Your main duties will be to supervise and undertake extensive patrolling of on- and off-street locations throughout the borough, identifying instances of littering, dog-fouling, graffiti and abandoned vehicles, issuing Fixed Penalty Notices face-to-face using hand-held terminals or manual systems when necessary.

You will also be the 'eyes and ears' of the Council, reporting other matters to the relevant departments as you carry out patrols. You will liaise with members of the public to give advice and guidance on relevant matters, ensuring that the Council's customer care policy is adhered to at all times.

You should have a detailed knowledge of the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act 2005 and also the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and other relevant environmental protection legislation. You will will also be required to conduct interviews in accordance with the Codes of Practice issued under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 ("PACE") upon appointment, or be capable of achieving this requirement very soon after appointment. You must have a current full UK driving licence with entitlement for cars and light vans, as at times you will be required to patrol the wider area using one of our fleet vehicles. You should have strong communication and customer care skills, have experience of working in a customer focussed environment, a basic level of computer skills/data entry and report writing, especially with regard to preparing documents for court. You should be able to manage your own workload and demonstrate a flexible approach to work and have 5 GCSEs at grades 4 or Grade C (or equivalent qualifications or experience).

A shift pattern is operated necessitating some weekend and unsocial hours working.
